General James E. Oglethorpe

General James E. Oglethorpe founded Augusta in 1736. More than 250 years later, in 2001, Augusta Tomorrow, Inc. commissioned a statue of General Oglethorpe for the Augusta Common.

On February 6, 2003, the sculpture unveiling and dedication were held at the Augusta Common. Guests from England representing Friends of Oglethorpe, Her Majesty's Deputy Consul General, President of Oglethorpe University and local dignitaries were part of the festivities. Portrayers as a Town Crier, General Oglethorpe, His Majesty's soldiers and local trappers initiated the festivities.
