HIGHER EDUCATION/CIVIC DISTRICT

About This Project

The Big Idea: Promote performing arts and health/science technology in downtown Augusta

Details: This downtown area includes many educational facilities and is the civic hub for Augusta. The Municipal Building, James Brown Arena and Bell Auditorium are situated here as is the Augusta Museum of History and the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art. The historic Miller Theater is actively being restored in 2017, and the adjacent Cullum’s Building will be renovated to give the Miller Theater more space and to house a music building that will become a music school.

The James Brown Arena is an important public facility. This is an aging structure, and plans are currently ongoing that will decide whether to potentially reconstruct or relocate this facility.

Founded in 2012, the Clubhou.se, relocated to the Academy of Richmond County in 2014 for additional space. This innovative enterprise provides classes and work space for entrepreneurial technology companies.

Progress: The Municipal Building has undergone a complete renovation and is now open. Miller Theater is in the final stages of renovation, the Clubhou.se’s innovation hub inspire ideas and create companies is thriving and a new concept “Augusta Innovation Zone” is being developed on the corner of 8th and Broad Streets.
